So beautiful they are – the swans…
So much grace in the turn of their neck, So much beauty and loss in their float over the shallow waters… But the thing that nature refused to them Is the thing that we seem to praise so much: Voice… There’s only one time in their life And one time only When they sing – Maybe the most wonderful song a man ever heard, The saddest and the simplest sound in the universe, Deeper than the laugh of a child, Deeper than the tears of a mother, Deeper than any truth we think we possess… And if you heard a swan singing And you smiled of surprise as in front of a miracle Just know that she sings for her death – First and last song of her life, First and last sound before sleeping in the arms of nature… So I wonder…what would be my last song? When we’re young We forget so easily to care and to love, To feel and to remember, To hear the world speaking to us, As if all is for granted, always there, Never lost with time and maybe for this reason not so important… We seem to seize the day, Because that’s what young people do, Sometimes mean and cruel, Sometimes proud of our big hearts and kindness… We use words as vehicles for our lies and truths Until they come to mean nothing, And the more we talk, the more we estrange from ourselves, From our dreams, From the myriads of possible futures Among which there’s only one that will happen – And if you want to know which will be Just take a second to wonder… What’s the swan’s song about? Maybe she sings about a reed-hidden nest, Maybe she sings about the sun that rises every day And sets every night, Maybe she sings about the freedom of her flight over big cities With tiny people crawling on earth and on life, Maybe she sings about bevies she met Or about that autumn when she got lost of hers, Maybe she sings about the caress of water on her feathers Or maybe about nothing we know… Maybe she sings about a storm That overturned the boat of a fisherman And about his death Or maybe…yes, maybe it’s not even a song, But her life, Leaving to nowhere, And this leaving hides every other leaving on earth – So I wonder…what’s the swan’s song about And what will be my last song?...
